How to choose

Pick the one whose setup you can finish at home or at the airport without trouble. Merchants differ, so a second wallet helps when a shop shows only one QR code. Do not put all your spending money on one app.

Questions before you go

Can I use my foreign card in both apps?

Both providers say so: Alipay accepts cards from major international networks issued outside the mainland, and Tencent lists five card networks for Weixin Pay.

Which one has lower fees?

Tencent says fees are waived for single payments of 200 RMB or less. Alipay’s page states no fee for international cards. Check the payment screen.

Do I still need cash?

The cash guide covers what to carry. A backup is wise because acceptance varies by shop.
