What changed in January 2026
MacRumors reported on 15 Jan 2026 that Apple expanded cross-border Apple Pay for mainland China users. They can make contactless payments in stores and online while travelling abroad with Visa cards issued by local banks, with eight major banks supported at launch. Mastercard was reported to be preparing similar support for select cardholders.
That is the opposite direction from a visitor’s trip. It helps Chinese cardholders abroad, not foreign visitors in China.
What we could not confirm
The Apple support pages and card network pages we could open did not say that foreign-issued cards in Apple Pay are accepted in mainland shops, and one network page refused our read. Travel guides report mixed results, with tap payments working mainly where a terminal accepts international cards. Treat those reports as unconfirmed.
A safer plan
- Link your card to Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly or on arrival.
- Carry the physical card as well, in case a terminal accepts it.
- Keep some cash for places that take neither.
- Check your bank’s foreign transaction fee before you go.
Shanghai Metro publishes that its service centers take overseas cards at card terminals; see the Visa and Mastercard guide.

Questions before you go
Does Apple Pay work in China for tourists?
We found no official statement that it does. The January 2026 expansion covers mainland users abroad.
What should I use instead?
A QR wallet such as Alipay or WeChat Pay, both of which accept international cards according to their providers.
Should I remove my cards from Apple Pay?
No. Keep them for your return and for places that support them, and add a second payment method for China.
