The limits you will actually meet
A missing cap on the provider’s page is not a promise that every payment goes through. Your bank can set a daily or per-payment limit on a foreign card, and a large purchase can trigger a security check. Look at your card limits in the banking app and raise them before you travel.
For a hotel deposit or a train ticket, a card at the front desk or the online booking page may be simpler than a QR code.
Plan for it
- Ask your bank about overseas limits and fees.
- Spread spending over two cards on different networks.
- Keep a reserve of cash.
- For a big payment, make it early in the day, so you can fix a block.
