The steps
- Download the Alipay app and enter your mobile number, then tap Next to register.
- After signing up, choose the “International Version”.
- Tap Add Now and follow the on-screen prompts to add a card.

What the card can do
International bank cards can be used for daily purchases in the mainland. The page says they cannot be used for person-to-person transfers, red packets, wealth management, insurance or other financial services.
No amount limit is listed for international cards. E-wallets used through Alipay+ may set their own limits and ask for identity authentication.
Costs and help
Alipay+ charges no extra fee for e-wallet payments, per the page. For international cards the page states no fee, and the exchange rate comes from the card scheme and your bank, so look at your card statement. Alipay customer service lists +86 571 2688 6000 from overseas, 08:00 to 24:00 GMT+8.
Do this before you fly
- Set up at home on reliable Wi-Fi, because app stores can be hard to reach on local networks.
- Keep your usual phone number reachable in case a code is needed.
- Make a first small payment to confirm the card works.
- Add WeChat Pay as a backup.
