Four easy buying mistakes to avoid

Buying on price alone

A low entry price may cover a different number of days or a smaller allowance than you need. Compare total trip cost, including any top-up you expect to buy. Keep screenshots of the actual package terms.

Starting the clock too early

Installation and activation are not always the same event. Read the provider’s activation policy before scanning a code. If validity starts immediately on installation, plan that step close enough to travel.

Assuming data includes a local number

Check calls and SMS separately. A data-only eSIM can supply internet to an app without supplying a Chinese mobile number. That distinction matters when a booking service asks for SMS verification.

Leaving no offline fallback

A coverage map does not guarantee a signal inside every building or along every journey. Keep addresses, reservations and the provider’s support instructions available without data.

What makes an eSIM a good fit?

Start with your phone, then your itinerary. It needs to support eSIM and be unlocked by your mobile carrier. Check the model and region of purchase in the provider’s compatibility list: similar phone names can have different hardware.

Next, match the plan’s validity to your arrival and departure dates. A small package can suit a light user who saves maps offline; regular video calls and hotspot use need a different allowance. Read whether tethering is included and whether the plan covers mainland China alone or also Hong Kong and Macau.

Look at routing, not just coverage

Local network coverage tells you which carrier supplies the radio signal. Routing describes where the internet traffic exits. They answer different questions. Airalo publishes a help page specifically about overseas access on its China eSIM; read the current terms for your exact package before purchase.

An eSIM does not change an app’s eligibility rules, your account region or its payment requirements. Save anything essential offline too.

Install before departure; activate at the right time

  1. Confirm compatibility and unlock status.
  2. Read the activation rule before you scan a QR code. Some packages start on installation; others on first connection.
  3. Install with reliable Wi-Fi and save the provider’s instructions offline.
  4. Label the eSIM clearly. At arrival, choose it for mobile data and follow its roaming instructions.
  5. Check your home SIM’s settings to avoid unintended roaming charges.

Questions before you go

Do I need an eSIM-compatible phone?

Yes, for an eSIM. Confirm support for the exact model and region of purchase, plus carrier unlock. A physical SIM or carrier roaming is a different option.

Does a China eSIM include a Chinese phone number?

Not necessarily. Read the package’s calls and SMS details separately from its data allowance. A data-only plan does not automatically include a local number.

Should I install the eSIM before departure?

Install while reliable Wi-Fi is available, following the provider’s instructions. Read the activation trigger first so you do not start the validity period too early.
