What the providers say
Airalo’s China page says you can install the eSIM whenever you like, as long as you have a stable internet connection, and that it must be on and selected for data. Yesim advises installing before the trip and activating when you need it, and says a plan must be activated within 90 days of purchase. Apple’s support page lists Wi-Fi or a hotspot as a requirement for installing.
Why waiting is risky
Airalo’s help page says the national firewall generally blocks Google services and several social apps on local networks. If you need an app store, a checkout page or an email to finish a purchase, that can get in the way. Buying at home on Wi-Fi removes the problem.
A simple order of tasks
- At home: check eSIM support and unlock, pick a plan and install it.
- Do not activate early if the validity starts on install.
- On arrival: switch the eSIM on for data and check it before you leave the airport.
Questions before you go
Can I buy at the airport?
Shops and counters exist, but their terms and prices are theirs. A plan bought online comes with a dated price you can compare first.
What if I forgot to install?
You need Wi-Fi from the hotel or airport. Use it to open the provider’s page and install the profile, then select it for data.
