Start with what you need
List the things your connection must do: maps, messaging, bookings, hotspot and any service that requires SMS. A data-only package does not automatically provide a Chinese phone number. Keeping your home number available for verification may still be useful.
Physical SIM arrangements depend on the seller and identification requirements. Ask about registration, supported devices, package validity and which services are included. Save the terms, rather than relying on a name such as “tourist SIM”.
Compare the practical trade-offs
| Your situation | What to look for | Before you commit |
|---|---|---|
| I want everything arranged at home | A compatible travel eSIM can reduce arrival-day setup. | Read installation and validity rules first. |
| I need calls or verification by SMS | Check for a package that explicitly includes a number and SMS. | Do not infer this from a data allowance. |
| My phone has one physical slot | Plan where your home SIM will go if you remove it. | You may still need it for bank or account verification. |
| I want to keep my home number | Check how dual SIM works on your exact model. | Decide which line handles data and which remains available for calls. |
Questions worth asking the seller
Ask which network the package uses, what identification is required, how long setup takes and what happens at the end of its validity. Ask whether there are separate rules for top-ups, hotspot use or adding a phone number.
Keep the SIM packaging and any account reference. If you are changing a physical SIM, store the original safely and keep an ejector tool where you can find it. Set aside time to confirm that data works before moving on.

Check eSIM compatibility, carrier unlock, coverage and when validity starts. Buy and install while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Prices in US dollars, from each provider’s China page on the date shown. They change often.
Keep a connection backup
Print or download your first hotel’s address in Chinese, your booking confirmation and your transfer instructions. Save your provider’s support details offline. A phone with a flat battery cannot use either type of SIM, so keep a charging cable and battery pack accessible.
