Your connection makes a difference

“Does it work?” needs one more question: on which connection? Local mobile data, a hotel’s Wi-Fi and international roaming are three different paths. Do not assume that what works on one will behave the same way on the next.

Check eSIM compatibility, carrier unlock, coverage and when validity starts. Buy and install while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Prices in US dollars, from each provider’s China page on the date shown. They change often.

Plan your video for the flight, not the hotel

If you rely on videos for the trip, such as language lessons, route guides or entertainment, download what your subscription lets you save before you leave, within the service’s own terms. Check how long downloads stay valid offline.

Turn video guides into notes

A video guide to a station or a ticket machine is hard to use without a connection. Write down the key steps, the Chinese name of the place and a screenshot of the main screens, and keep them in an offline note.

What the provider says about routing

Airalo’s help page says its China eSIM uses international roaming data routing, with traffic routed through gateways outside mainland China, and that this applies to eSIM data, not to hotel Wi-Fi. It also says a VPN is not required with its China, Regional Asia and Global eSIMs.

These are the provider’s own statements, not an independent test, and they do not describe every eSIM. Each plan has its own terms, and each service’s own country and account rules still apply. Read the page of the plan you intend to buy.

What about Wi-Fi and VPNs?

What holds for an eSIM’s mobile data does not carry over automatically to hotel Wi-Fi. If you are considering a VPN, read the provider’s current China support first: NordVPN’s help page covers connection problems from China and does not promise access.

Do this before you fly

  • Update YouTube and make sure you can sign in.
  • Check your account recovery method and access to your usual phone number.
  • Save travel documents and essential contacts offline.
  • Read the routing notes for the data plan you actually buy.

What NordVPN says about China

NordVPN publishes a support page about connecting from China. Read it before you rely on any VPN: availability there is uncertain and can change without notice. Install and sign in before you leave home.

Questions before you go

Can I stream YouTube on a roaming eSIM?

Airalo says its eSIM data is routed internationally, but that is the provider’s own statement and not an independent test. Streaming also uses a lot of data: see the data guide for planning figures.

Are downloads a safe plan?

They help when your subscription allows them, within the service’s terms. Check that downloaded videos still open with the phone offline.

What about hotel Wi-Fi?

It is a separate connection. Airalo says its routing applies to eSIM data, not to hotel Wi-Fi.
