Your connection makes a difference
“Does it work?” needs one more question: on which connection? Local mobile data and a hotel’s Wi-Fi are different from international roaming. Do not assume a working connection on one network means the next network will behave the same way.
Keep the phone number associated with your account accessible for verification. Tell your travel companions where to find essential contact details if messaging is unavailable.

Your WhatsApp number and your data line are different
Your account’s phone number and the SIM supplying internet do different jobs. A travel eSIM can provide a data connection while your account remains associated with its usual number. Check any sign-in or verification requirements before departure.
Keep access to your existing number if you expect a verification message. Do not change account settings at the last minute without understanding the effect on your contacts and recovery method.
Plan the first message before the flight
Tell the person meeting you which hotel you are going to and when you expect to arrive. Save their contact details outside the app. Agree on a backup way to reach them if your phone has no data or their usual service is unavailable.

Coverage and routing are different things.
A travel eSIM can use a Chinese carrier’s signal while routing data overseas. Airalo describes this for its China eSIM. Check the exact provider and package; it is not a property of every eSIM.

What about Wi-Fi and VPNs?
An eSIM’s mobile data arrangement does not carry over automatically to hotel Wi-Fi. If you are considering a VPN, read the provider’s current China support first. Availability is uncertain.

- Update WhatsApp and make sure you can sign in.
- Check your account recovery method and access to your usual phone number.
- Save travel documents and essential contacts offline.
- Check the routing notes for the data package you actually buy.
What NordVPN says about China
NordVPN publishes a support page about connecting from China. Read it before you rely on any VPN: availability there is uncertain and can change without notice. Install and sign in before you leave home.

Questions before you go
Will WhatsApp work on hotel Wi-Fi?
WhatsApp is generally restricted on mainland local networks. Hotel Wi-Fi is a separate connection from an international roaming data plan.
Does every travel eSIM have the same routing?
No. Check the exact provider and package. A claim about one provider does not establish the behavior of every eSIM.
What should I save offline?
Keep bookings, written addresses, essential contacts and account recovery arrangements usable without relying on a single online service.
