What the sources say about Telegram

| Wikipedia’s list of blocked websites | Lists Telegram as blocked since July 2015. | 5 Nov 2026 |
The Wikipedia table is community-edited and flags itself as needing updates, so treat its dates as a guide and not as a live status. Rules change without notice, and a block can be lifted or added from one week to the next.
Which connection are you on?
An answer about one app depends on the path your traffic takes: local mobile data, a hotel’s Wi-Fi or a roaming eSIM are three different routes. Airalo’s help page says its China eSIM routes data through gateways outside mainland China and that this does not apply to hotel Wi-Fi. That is the provider’s statement about its own product, not an independent test.
Compare mobile data options
The table shows each provider’s cheapest plan, a 5 GB plan and the shortest unlimited plan, each with the date it was checked.
Yesim
CHINA- 1 GB, 30 days
- 5 GB, 30 days: $13.20
- Unlimited, 5 days: $21.60
- Speed may be reduced under the network’s fair-use policy.
Airalo
CHINA- 1 GB, 3 days
- 5 GB, 30 days: $14.50
- Unlimited, 5 days: $19.00
- Throttled to 1 Mbps after 3 GB per day.
Saily
CHINA- 1 GB, 7 days
- 5 GB, 30 days: $15.99
- Unlimited, 5 days: $22.99
- 5 GB per day at full speed, then up to 1 Mbps.
Check eSIM compatibility, carrier unlock, coverage and when validity starts. Buy and install while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Prices in US dollars, from each provider’s China page on the date shown. They change often.
Agree a second channel for your groups
If a tour, a host or a friend coordinates with you in a Telegram group, ask for an email address or a phone number you can reach on your roaming plan. Copy meeting points and times into an offline note.
Save what matters as a screenshot
Addresses, booking codes and meeting times shared in a chat are easy to lose. A screenshot opens without a connection; a message that has not downloaded does not.
Do this before you fly
- Update Telegram and check that you can sign in.
- Confirm that account recovery works without your home SIM if you plan to swap it.
- Save bookings, addresses and key contacts offline.
- Read the routing notes of the data plan you actually buy.
What NordVPN says about China
NordVPN publishes a support page about connecting from China. Read it before you rely on any VPN: availability there is uncertain and can change without notice. Install and sign in before you leave home.

Questions before you go
Is Telegram blocked in China?
Wikipedia’s list shows it as blocked since July 2015. The list flags itself as needing updates, so treat that as a guide.
Will an eSIM change that?
Airalo says its eSIM data is routed through gateways outside mainland China. That is the provider’s own statement and it does not name Telegram.
What should I save offline?
Addresses, booking codes, meeting points and the contact details of the people you will meet.
