Your connection makes a difference
“Does it work?” needs one more question: on which connection? Local mobile data, a hotel’s Wi-Fi and international roaming are three different paths. Do not assume that what works on one will behave the same way on the next.
Compare mobile data options
The table shows each provider’s cheapest plan, a 5 GB plan and the shortest unlimited plan. Every price carries the date it was checked.

Check eSIM compatibility, carrier unlock, coverage and when validity starts. Buy and install while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Prices in US dollars, from each provider’s China page on the date shown. They change often.
Do not let your plans live only in Facebook
Event pages, group posts and Messenger threads are easy to lose when a connection drops. Copy the meeting point, the time and the host’s contact details into an offline note before you leave.
If a friend or a host will coordinate with you through Facebook, agree on a second channel in advance, for example an email address or a phone number you can reach on your roaming plan.
Check account access before you go
Make sure you can sign in and that your recovery options work without your home SIM if you plan to swap it. Do not store passwords or recovery codes in a note you share.
What the provider says about routing
Airalo’s help page says its China eSIM uses international roaming data routing, with traffic routed through gateways outside mainland China, and that this applies to eSIM data, not to hotel Wi-Fi. It also says a VPN is not required with its China, Regional Asia and Global eSIMs.
These are the provider’s own statements, not an independent test, and they do not describe every eSIM. Each plan has its own terms, and each service’s own country and account rules still apply. Read the page of the plan you intend to buy.
What about Wi-Fi and VPNs?
What holds for an eSIM’s mobile data does not carry over automatically to hotel Wi-Fi. If you are considering a VPN, read the provider’s current China support first: NordVPN’s help page covers connection problems from China and does not promise access.
Do this before you fly
- Update Facebook and make sure you can sign in.
- Check your account recovery method and access to your usual phone number.
- Save travel documents and essential contacts offline.
- Read the routing notes for the data plan you actually buy.
What NordVPN says about China
NordVPN publishes a support page about connecting from China. Read it before you rely on any VPN: availability there is uncertain and can change without notice. Install and sign in before you leave home.

Questions before you go
Will Facebook work on hotel Wi-Fi?
Airalo lists Facebook as generally inaccessible on local networks in mainland China. Hotel Wi-Fi is a separate connection from an international roaming data plan.
Does every travel eSIM have the same routing?
No. Check the exact provider and plan. A claim about one provider does not establish the behavior of every eSIM.
What should I save offline?
Bookings, written addresses, essential contacts and the details of anything arranged through Facebook groups or events.
