Your connection makes a difference
“Does it work?” needs one more question: on which connection? Local mobile data and a hotel’s Wi-Fi are different from international roaming. Do not assume a working connection on one network means the next network will behave the same way.
Download boarding passes, hotel confirmations and attachments before departure. Store important booking references separately from your inbox.

Check eSIM compatibility, carrier unlock, coverage and when validity starts. Buy and install while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Prices in US dollars, from each provider’s China page on the date shown. They change often.
Make an offline travel folder
Download your hotel confirmations, flight and train details, ticket vouchers and any attached PDF. Open the files once with your phone offline to confirm that you saved the document itself, rather than a shortcut to the inbox.
Keep booking references in a plain note too. If a voucher has a changing code or requires a live app, follow the seller’s own access instructions instead of assuming a screenshot is sufficient.
Protect access to your account
Check your recovery methods before departure and keep them secure. Think about what happens if your usual number cannot receive a message or your phone is lost. Use the account provider’s own recovery guidance and your organization’s policy for work email.
Never place passwords, recovery codes or identity-document scans in a shared travel note. A simple itinerary can be shareable without exposing account access.
What about Wi-Fi and VPNs?
An eSIM’s mobile data arrangement does not carry over automatically to hotel Wi-Fi. If you are considering a VPN, read the provider’s current China support first. Availability is uncertain.

- Update Gmail and make sure you can sign in.
- Check your account recovery method and access to your usual phone number.
- Save travel documents and essential contacts offline.
- Check the routing notes for the data package you actually buy.
What NordVPN says about China
NordVPN publishes a support page about connecting from China. Read it before you rely on any VPN: availability there is uncertain and can change without notice. Install and sign in before you leave home.

Questions before you go
Will Gmail work on hotel Wi-Fi?
Gmail is generally restricted on mainland local networks. Hotel Wi-Fi is a separate connection from an international roaming data plan.
Does every travel eSIM have the same routing?
No. Check the exact provider and package. A claim about one provider does not establish the behavior of every eSIM.
What should I save offline?
Keep bookings, written addresses, essential contacts and account recovery arrangements usable without relying on a single online service.
