China travel tips: your before-you-fly plan

A week before: make the key decisions

Choose your data arrangement and check your phone. Read the entry conditions for your passport and full route. Register a payment app and complete the steps it requests while you have access to your usual number and bank.

Make one digital travel pocket

Create a small offline folder with the first hotel address, bookings, onward travel and essential contacts. Use file names that make sense under stress: “First hotel: address” is easier to find than a long order code.

Test the folder with the phone disconnected. Keep sensitive documents secure and share only what a travel companion actually needs. A screenshot of an itinerary should not expose your bank or account details.

Keep the first day deliberately light

Arrange the first journey and one place to eat, then leave room for a slow start. A timed attraction immediately after arrival gives you little flexibility if entry formalities, baggage or transport take longer than expected.

Once you are settled, confirm the next day’s booking and meeting point. The aim of preparation is to give yourself more attention for the place you came to see.

The day before: make offline copies

Download confirmations, save addresses in Chinese and English and store emergency contacts somewhere you can open without a connection. Charge your devices and put a cable within reach. Share the travel plan with someone you trust if that is useful to you.

At arrival: work through one thing at a time

Follow your eSIM provider’s activation instructions, confirm which SIM supplies mobile data and open the saved route to your hotel. Keep home-carrier roaming settings consistent with the arrangement you chose. Check the first payment carefully before heading out for the day.
